Our Southwest Vacation 2006
Come travel with us...
Hoover Dam
Wednesday, July 19, 2006: We woke up bright and early in the morning and headed for Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam is in Boulder City, Nevada, about 30 minutes from Las Vegas in Black Canyon. What a lotta concrete!

HEIGHT: 726.4 feet
CREST LENGTH: 1244 feet
CREST WIDTH: 45 feet
BASE WIDTH: 660 feet
VOLUME OF CONCRETE: 3.25 million cubic yards
COST: $175 Million
BUILT: between 1931 and 1935
We walked around and above the dam (it was very cool to look down at all that concrete, and the Colorado River so far beneath us). We took a tour of the dam, which brought us below and inside the dam walls to see the huge electric turbines that provide electricity for areas of Nevada, Arizona, and California (generating 4 billion kilowatt hours a year!)

Yes, it was
HOT!!! 112 degrees, and this was in the morning hours. The humidity was much less once we were out of Vegas, and now I can see what they mean by 'dry heat'. Once we were done with the dam tour, we jumped in the van and headed northeast to Utah.
