We arrived in Vegas to the 100+ degree heat. It may be a 'dry' heat, but Vegas has it's share of humidity! The first thing I noticed when we got off the plane was the one thing I had been waiting to see - my first mountain! Not one of those wimpy, green rounded mountains we have on the east coast...these were jagged and bumpy and grey and looked just like I had expected them to be, only a LOT bigger. |
Upon arrival, we grabbed our rental van and headed to The Stratosphere to check in. One night was not enough time to experience this very cool hotel! We checked in around 6:30pm, dropped our luggage, and immediately headed into 'Old Vegas' to find a good buffet to eat supper. |
The older section of town is very interesting. There is a cover that spans the entire street, and when it gets dark, they play light shows and videos on the ceiling. It's like being outdoors, and yet not being outdoors! |
We found a good (but expensive) buffet. Everyone (except myself - the most un-adventurous person when it comes to food!) tried a lot of new seafood items like clams and oysters. I stuck to the safe meal - spaghetti! After dinner we were just in time to catch the light show on the ceiling of the street. |
After eating and doing a very quick exploration of Old Vegas, we headed to 'the Strip' - the street that all the postcards are of and movies are filmed. I saw several miles of brightly lit casinos and hotels. 'Gaudy' is not a bad word in Vegas - it's something everyone seemed to strive for! We started at The Wynn and walked down the strip to try and catch all of the famous sights. We waited in an incredibly hot, packed crowd for the mediocre pirate show at Treasure Island, and left before it was even halfway through (vastly overrated!). From there we headed to The Mirage to watch the volcano erupt in front of the hotel. |
