2009 trip to California

Day 1 - San Francisco

San Francisco is a lot hillier (is that a word???) than I had imagined! The first thing we did when we arrived was check in to the hotel (Best Western Americania - decorated in funky 60's furniture!) and head down to the trolley and the fun part of the city.

San Fran traditional trolley car. Worth the money to ride...as we found out later when we missed the last trolley and had to walk the 20+ blocks back (up and down hills) at night to our hotel!

Me on the trolley! No Rice-A-Roni, unfortunately.

The family hanging on...the trolley ride isn't a smooth one!

Walking up and down the hills exploring the city...

The bay at fishermen's Wharf

Kevin threatening to dump Courtney into the frigid bay

Sunset on the bay

We stumbled upon the North Beach festival when checking the Italian section for a good restaurant.

Eating at a great Italian Restaurant, a great way to start a vacation!

Kevin and I walking through the city after dinner.

Ghirardelli Square, home of the killer chocolate (and yes, they give out free samples!).

Caitlyn and Courtney waiting for the trolley

Alcatraz Island...the one tour we missed out on because we didn't reserve tickets in advance.

I was stopped by a street performer and made a part of his act!

We managed to see a lot in our first evening in San Francisco. Missing the last trolley was a bad idea, as we had to walk from Ghirardelli Square all the way back to our hotel (over 20 blocks) up and down hills at night. Lesson learned...plan ahead!
